While at a Super Bowl party last night I lamented the fact that there were no horse commercials at all during the first half of the game. Normally Budwiser has some great Clydesdale commercials! In fact, while I am a fan of Canadian beer most of the time I make a point to drink Budwiser on Super Bowl Sunday in support of the great ads the normally run. This year? Not so much. There was only one lone real horse related commercial the entire Super Bowl! Was anyone else disappointed or am I the only dork out there? It was so bad that I almost counted the Honda and VW commercials with a horse in the background as a horsey.
One of the people at the party told me why there was only one single lone horsey ad (which you can watch below) this year. It was because the Clydesdale ad did not test well. I don’t even know what that means, but what I do know is that if it were not for the people on facebook there would have been no Clydesdale ads in the Super Bowl so thank you facebook voters. Seriously Budwiser, if the fact that you might not run the ad makes news what does that tell you? It tells me that EVERYONE loves the Budwiser Clydesdale’s.
So what do you think? I thought it was cute. Not the best ad ever, but way better then some of the other crappy Budwiser ads like the beer house. Clearly their Ad department needs help, so does anyone out there have any ideas they want to share? I had the idea for them to dress a skinny TB up like a Clydesdale with the tag line of “all the test with a lot fewer calories” since they were all about light beer ads last night.

Haha … what brilliance! A skinny TB to promote light beer. That would have been perfect, especially since that’s what they promoted in all of the other commercials. I think Budweiser needs to hire a new ad executive.
LOL I thought this commercial was cute- not what I’d expect from Bud during the Super Bowl, but still cute. (Kinda true too- nothing comes between friends!!)
LOVE your lean TB idea!!! You ought to get in touch with Bud and tell them!
I suspect the non-American ownership of Anheiser Busch now has something to do with the lack of good Clyde ads. I guess we are fortunate that they’ve decided to keep them around considering how much talk there was when they first bought the company that they would be sold off.
Browse over to Wikipedia and read up on Anheuser Busch – the Budweiser company. There was a change of ownership recently and they have made some budget cuts that would explain the lameness of their ads. I pulled this from Wiki:
“Since the acquisition by InBev, significant changes in advertising plans have been rolled out, predicated on the belief that “changing demographics and media habits no longer require spending as much on mainstream sports events”
- A-B is cutting its television advertising budget for the U.S. broadcast of the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics and “won’t seek to be the exclusive beer advertiser” for those events
-dropping Omnicom Group’s Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, and other advertising agencies “responsible for some of its best-known past ads”
- paying by the project rather than an annual lump sum
- reducing the annual number of new advertisements from 100 to 50-60.
And here’s a good article about the Clydesdale ad from last night:

I also remember somewhere they said that the new company was not interested in keeping with the tradition of the Clydesdales. Maybe this is the beginning of phasing them out.
That would be a shame.
I was really disappointed with the Anheiser Busch ads this year, especially the one clydesdale one. It was like all the other ones, trying to pull at your heart strings, I was sitting there waiting for the kicker at the end, but there really wasn’t one. It was basically the same ad they have had in the past with the donkey, but this time replaced with a steer. I thought it was unoriginal and boring at best.
This ad was cute but not as good as some of their past years were. My favorites were the horses playing football. They were always good ads in the past. I was sorta disappointed, I told my husband I was only watching for the Clydesdale commercial, the rest of the time I was actually reading.
LOL! LOVE your idea with the TB! In fact..I know a skinny TB that isn’t camera shy!
YES, I was too another dork crying about “WHERE are the Bud clydesdales?!?!” The commercial was cute, but aired late..I almost missed it!
How could those NOT test well? Everyone I know (and no, I’m the only horse freak) LOVES them! Strange….
Pitch your idea and I’ll start grooming Laz for it! He matches their color scheme at least! lol!
Video was removed…..bummer! I can’t see it. I could go look it up somewhere, but I am lazy. LOL!
They run ads (among other things on TV) in front of test groups to see what the reactions are. If they don’t “test” well among the “testers”, then they are not used.
OMG…SO happy am not alone. I wait all year for a Clydesdale commercial. I have no interest at all in the superbowl. My favorite was when the little colt was trying so hard to become one of the big guys. I have a draft cross, so thoses big guys really tug at my heart
