So you know how I said Gen was doing better? Well he was…as in past tense. Last night I pulled the wrap off and there was a BIG BUMP…not on the back of the leg with the open sore. No, that would be too easy. My horse had a huge lump on the FRONT of his leg. Sigh. I swear my horse does stuff like this on purpose. The vet it coming out today to look at him. I just don’t know what to do with him anymore. And I know the sore still has something funky going on with it because it is still sending out pus. Ew. And it, as well as the bump on the front of his leg, were both smoking hot. Anyone have any ideas about a bump appearing right at the front of the leg when there is a sore at the back? Because I have no clue. Everyone yells at me for being such a worry wart and a total drama queen when Gen gets injured now, but crap like this is why! After 4 days on oral anti-biotoics I don’t think it is bacterial anymore. I want to know what it is. I don’t think whatever this is is life threatening, but at the same time I let my self sleep in an extra 15 minutes today and I still feel like I didn’t get any sleep at all last night because I am stressed. I freaking hate the damn sports medicine boots he has to be turned out with! I will let you all know if my vet figures out what it is. Since I am too tried to type I will just give you guys a picture time line. Sorry they are huge, I don’t have time to figure out why at that moment.
Here is how swollen the sore was last Wednesday…gross right! It was super hot too.
And I know this is not the best picture in the world, but the above is how much the swelling went down in the 24 hours after we started antibiotics. And you can also see his tree trunk of a left leg. If he doesn’t knock this off we are going to have 2 fat front legs instead of one from scar tissue.
The picture above is a picture of the sore itself as of Friday. I also am holding up the gauze to show the daily pus discharge. Now it doesn’t look like a lot, but that is just what still showed up even with the bright camera flash. There was at least 2xs that much visable to the normal eye.
And this picture just makes me laugh because I have a very angry pony with SMZ leftovers on his lips and his halter. My horse is a total terror about taking oral medications…I got some SMZ’s on my coat as well. I tired to take the picture of his whole head but if I stepped any farther away he would flip his lip and not stand still because he was waiting for his carrot.
And I wish I had photo shop because the picture above looks wierd. Let me explain what you are looking at though. On the left of the picture is the back of the leg where the tendon is. That is also where the sore is located and as you can see it is starting to swell up again. What da hell! It is covered in anti-biotic oinment, he is on SMZ’s and the only time it is open is after it has been scrubbed with betadine and doused in alchol. How can it be sollen?!?! At the right of the photo is a side shot of the new mystery bump. See how big that is! It is almost perfectly in the middle of the connon bone and yet it makes his leg look so big that picture almost looks like a knee! And before anyone asks that shark tooth looking thing is yet another sore that has calloused over. After this whole ordeal I don’t think my vet is allowed to cut that one back EVER!
And the above is a front shot of the leg with wrap layer 1 on. I still do a stable bandage over all that. Again, I wish I had photo shop because I could have colored in the whole area where the bump is. If you see the silver marker on the hot pink vetwrap (Gen’s punishment for hurting himself
) and color it in with your head on the gaze part that is the size of the bump.
And this is a picture of a very muddy neck. Which is how I know Gen is feeling fine. Whatever it is doesn’t seem to be impacting his attitude. The pissy face is beacuse it takes FOREVER to do his leg now so he is just sick of being on cross ties. I can’t do anything until the leg dries after I scrub it with betadine and is wrapped up for protection…and things don’t dry in the wet weather like we had around here today.

Poor Genny!! I’m sure he is feeling frustrated with his sore foot as well.
I feel bad for you. Situations like this are indeed a headache. The very thing that is supposed to keep him safe is causing other problems…Grrrrrr.
When I was reading your posts on this, I did have one thought and I don’t know if it would help or not, but how about putting a nylon stocking underneath his boot to keep things from chaffing there? I’ve heard of endurance riders doing this underneath hoof boots to keep them from rubbing the horse’s pasterns.
Here is a link to another blog I read by an endurance rider and the post she did on using the stockings on her horse.

I’m not sure if this would work or not in Genny’s case, but it might be something to consider trying….
Huggs to both of you…..and I will try and send some thoughts to the healing gods today to help Genny get better
