Fourth – Now it is time for the stinky stuff. Painting. I prefer a high gloss paint because that is how I feel the real thing I modeled my ribbon rack off of looks. Nice and shiny. Now I will recommend several coats on paint because you don’t want any of the wood to show through. It should be all white. This is by far the most time consuming aspect of the whole thing. You have to paint a coat, wait for it to dry, and then do the whole thing over again. I would recommend doing this on day one of the project so you can let it dry over night before next next step.

Fifth – Now you can start to tell what this is going to be. It is time to add the letters. I chose my favorite 3 and got black letters I had found at the craft store and glues them on. This actually took me time, but only because I could not figure out which 3 letters I wanted to use. It had to be just the right spot in the ring (now can you tell what it is?)

Sixth – You totally have to know what this is going to be by now. A Dressage Ring! All you have left to do is get your hot glue gun out, bunch some of the craft store fake flowers and glue them on. I recommend you buying flowers to match what ever room you want the ribbon rack to hang in.

Above it what your finished product will look like. Even with waiting for paint to dry this is still a 2 day project. It is something fun and special you can do that will be a talking point when people (horsey or not) come to your home. And it saves you a bundle doing it yourself instead of ordering it for a catalog. Not into dressage? Make one to look like a jump instead…or a coral. The sky is the limit as long as you are creative!

The Finished Ribbon Rack
Ta dah! It was very satisfying to make a special ribbon rack for Gennyral’s ribbons. I know it sounds silly, but I feel like i just put an end to his show career by doing this. Something I have been needing to do for 2 years. I needed to let go of the fact that Gen can’t earn any more ribbons…and that is okay. I am moving on and letting go of that loss. Gen is still a wonderful lawn ornament and that is plenty good enough for me these days. So my fun craft idea helped me out emotionally as well. I was very careful to measure it just long enough so that it looked plenty full with all Gen’s ribbons. I think it looks pretty great. What do you think? Ready to make your own?

The rack came out great. If I ever get the ribbons out of the boxes downstairs, I might give it a try. It’s a good idea, you should make a bunch and sell them at shows and barns. Everybody could use one or two.
That is so creative! I have seen lots of different ribbon racks before but never one that looks like a dressage ring.
I had a lot of ribbons from doing the pleasure and breed shows, and while I had started out running a wire across the top of the wall, that quickly got overcrowded and I started to put them on my window blinds, since I didn’t use the windows in my room. But I wanted to do something else with them, and I didn’t want to put a lot of extra holes in my wall. So I got a panel of lattice from Home Depot:

(Excuse my messy room, and the pink walls we never repainted after moving in!)
I really like your crafty idea, though. I think I might try to make one for my room here, because there’s no way I could fit a lattice on the wall, let alone fill it up!
That looks so great!! What a nice idea. I might just have to make one myself!
I love it! What a great idea. Now I just need to win some ribbons…
Love this!
I want to make one too. Where was it originally advertised? Or did you dream it up yourself?
I am having “problems” with my blog, so it can only be read if I invite you. :p Long story, but if you want to continue to read it, pop me an email so I can invite you. Sorry!

I love the ribbon rack! I especially love the diy aspect of it. Keep up the good creative work!
